Creating a Peaceful Home with Feng Shui

When we speak to folks who want to learn more about feng shui, whether they're students or clients, a lot of them mention wanting to feel more peace in their lives. It makes sense that someone might turn to feng shui when they’re seeking peace and harmony, because while there are many things in our lives that we can’t control, we generally do have the ability to make adjustments to our living spaces that can support us.
What is a peaceful home?
When someone says they’re looking for peace, we want to investigate what that means and understand more about what in their life is not feeling peaceful right now. We always ask our students and clients a lot of questions when they’re working with them to get a better sense of how we can support them with their specific goals. After we ask questions about many different aspects of someone’s life, we can then investigate how that may play out in their floor plan and their relationships, and then we can make some corrections in their home and implement intentional shifts.
People often want a fast tip to make things better, but we invite you to consider this topic more carefully. Just like there’s fast fashion and fast food, there’s also fast feng shui. If you really want to cultivate more peace in your home, take some time to think about what peace means to you and what you are really wanting when you say “a peaceful home.”
Below, we’re sharing five simple steps you can take in your own home to invite more peace, but instead of treating this as a quick checklist, we encourage you to treat it like a journey. Approach these steps with curiosity, and know that creating a peaceful home and a peaceful life is an organic process that takes time.
Create a bedroom that feels safe and supportive
In feng shui, the bedroom is one of the most important spaces in your home, so if you only do one thing from this list, we suggest starting here. Your bedroom directly affects your rest, your nervous system, and your relationships. When the bedroom feels supportive, it becomes easier for you to relax and to recharge, and as a result, it becomes easier to be a more productive human being in the world.
One of the first things that feng shui consultants will look at in your bedroom is how your bed is placed. This may sound really simple, but it is quite powerful. When you are lying in your bed, can you see the entry point to the bedroom, or is your back to the door? You want to be in the commanding position, which means you are able to see the bedroom door when you're lying in bed without being directly in line with the door. This position can increase your feelings of security and ease. Even if you don’t realize it, knowing that you can see what’s coming into the room can give you a sense of comfort and lower your anxiety.
Next, make sure the bed itself is supportive. You want to have a solid, stable headboard that creates the feeling of a mountain behind your back. Soft, curved headboards that are wood or upholstered are ideal. The most important thing is to make sure that the headboard is securely affixed to the bed so that it gives you a sense of security. Then, you can add softness and color, making sure the bed feels nourishing and calm to you. Natural fibers are especially supportive.
If your intention to create peace has to do with a peaceful relationship, make sure the bedroom setup has a sense of equality. Both partners should have an easy and comfortable entry point to the bed, with side tables and lights that are equal. This doesn’t mean they have to be a matching set, but each partner should have an equal sense of importance without one partner having to compromise more.
Lean into yin energy
One of the easiest ways to create a peaceful feeling in your home is to lean into yin energy. In feng shui, yin energy is quiet, receptive, and calming. In many modern homes and when we are outside, there can be a lot of activity or yang energy. This can be overstimulating, and it can leave you feeling restless or emotionally drained. Even if a home is feeling pretty peaceful, we may have our attention on our electronic devices, which are very active and yang. By creating an environment that is more yin and making active efforts to be present in our environmental spaces, we can cultivate more peace and more harmony in our homes.
To bring in more yin energy, we want to soften the qi in our homes. This could mean softer lighting like table lamps, warm lights, candles, or dimmers that allow you to put your lights on a lower setting. Bright, overhead lights are more yang, like the sun. You can also increase yin energy by letting some areas of your home be dark. When you have some dark spaces in your home, especially in the evening, this helps to let your body know it’s time to rest. This doesn’t mean your whole house should be dark, but make sure there’s at least a dark corner in your bedroom when you’re preparing for bed.
Another way to soften the qi in your home is to use curved or rounded shapes, plush materials, and soft textures. These will all bring in more yin energy into the space and create a gentle flow of qi throughout the space. You can also bring in materials that dampen sound to increase yin energy, like soft surfaces and fabrics that absorb sound vibrations. This creates a calmer, softer environment. You could also designate certain rooms or times of day in the home to be a quiet space or a quiet time to cultivate yin energy and create more peace.
Ground the energy of the home
A peaceful home benefits from consciously bringing in grounding energy. In feng shui, that means bringing in the earth element. The earth element represents stability, nourishment, support, wellbeing, grounding, and stillness. When the earth element is balanced in a home, the home will feel more calming and emotionally steady. There are a few ways to introduce earth energy to your home: you could bring in earthy colors like warm browns, yellows, and ochres, or you can add furniture or decor in square shapes, like a square rug or coffee table. Alternatively, you can introduce the earth element through natural stones or crystals or heavy objects that have a grounding presence. Adding heavy objects can be especially helpful in areas of your home where you feel like the energy is flowing too quickly. You can also bring in more stable earth energy by paying attention to the center of your home. In feng shui, the center of your home is a stable place that is connected to the earth element. It can be grounding to spend time in the center of your home or the center of your bedroom, and while you’re there, you can really think about the earth beneath your feet and notice how it is always present, steady, and supportive. Additionally, you can hang a feng shui crystal ball in this area with the intention of smoothing and harmonizing the qi. Learn more about feng shui crystal balls here.
Invite nature into your home
One of the easiest ways to create a more peaceful home is to reconnect with nature inside your interior spaces. The idea of connecting the inside and the outside is a foundational concept in feng shui. In feng shui, natural elements like plants, crystals, natural fibers, and sunlight help a space feel more alive, balanced, and nourishing. These elements can soften the atmosphere of a home while also supporting specific intentions like protection, confidence, intuition, or emotional healing. For example, adding healthy plants throughout your home can introduce qualities of vitality, flexibility, and compassionate energy. Plants boost our life force energy and they can help a space feel calmer and more connected.
Another natural element you can bring into your home is sunlight. Opening your window treatments regularly during the day will allow you to bring in the bright, uplifting yang qi of the sun. We’ve already gone over the importance of yin qi, but remember that it’s all about balance. Your body needs both light and dark. During the daytime, it’s helpful to allow the sunlight to come in and let this yang qi flow throughout your space.
You can also work with crystals, which we know are very popular with our community! Intentionally working with crystals based on the energy you want to cultivate in your home is a wonderful way to bring peace and harmony into your space. Two of our favorite crystals for peace are smoky quartz and black tourmaline. These are known as protective crystals that absorb heavy energy. You can also work with clear quartz to clear and amplify your intention of bringing more peace into your space and life. If your goal is to create peace in your relationships, you could place stones like rose quartz or rhodonite in the bedroom to support softness, connection, and emotional healing. Grounding stones like tiger’s eye or citrine are a good choice for shared living spaces or the center of the home to support confidence and harmony.
Create a ritual of clearing and blessing your home regularly
Sometimes a home doesn't feel peaceful because there is old, stagnant, or chaotic energy there. This could be a result of something that has occurred in the home, like a big party with lots of different people, and the home's energy can pick up on that chaos afterward. These are times when you may want to transmute the energy in the home and refresh the atmosphere through space clearing. Space clearing is not just about getting rid of something bad, but rather an opportunity to notice what isn’t helpful anymore and where you want to invite in something new. There are many different space clearing methods, and here are a few of our favorites:
-
Sweep your home with intention. The act of mindful sweeping can be very powerful, and you can visualize sweeping out any negative energy as you sweep out any physical debris.
Use scent to uplift the energy. You could add 27 drops of orange essential oil to a spray bottle of water to create a space clearing mist, and use this throughout your home. Oranges symbolize bright, vibrant yang energy that helps to transmute stagnant, heavy qi.
Work with sound. Ring metal bells, a metal chime, or a metal or crystal singing bowl near your home’s entryway or corners to break up any stagnant energy and invite in supportive qi.
Burn or simmer botanicals. Look in your spice cabinet or garden to find a bay leaf or rosemary and simmer it in water or burn it to refresh the energy in your home. You could also burn incense, which is often made of natural plant materials, or simmer water with a few drops of essential oils like frankincense or sandalwood. The process of burning or simmering transmutes the quality of the plant with heat or fire, allowing it to transform into either smoke or vapor and rise to the heavens. This also signifies a shift in the invisible aspects of the space as well.
Remember: a peaceful home is not something that's created all at once. We invite you to walk away from fast feng shui and instead see this process as a journey to becoming more in tune with your home and environment.
