Have you ever wondered how to work with crystals in feng shui? In this post, we’re sharing our tips for choosing a crystal, crystal recommendations for each area of the feng shui bagua, and how to create a crystal grid for your desk to strengthen boundaries between your work and home life.

Note: we’re talking about natural crystals in this post. If you want to learn more about the crystal balls or prisms that are often used in feng shui adjustments, check out this podcast episode.

How to choose crystals

Our first recommendation when it comes to choosing a crystal is to let the crystal find you. If you go to a crystal store, see which stone you feel attracted to. You can treat this almost like an oracle, and look up the crystal later to see what it’s inviting you to work on. Even if you’re looking for a certain type of crystal, you can also notice which specific stone feels like the right one for you.

We recommend setting an intention as you leave your home that you’re allowing a crystal to find you. Then, take your time and notice what happens when you set an intention and create a ritual like this. Maybe you’ll feel drawn to a different stone than what you were looking for, or maybe you’ll even find one on the sidewalk on your way to the store! This practice of going out with a formal intention but being open to different outcomes is a wonderful way to move through life.

Second, be mindful that natural crystals are resources that come from our planet, and we should ask for consent before we bring them home. Whether you are purchasing a stone or finding one on the ground, try pausing and asking the crystal if it wants to come home with you. If you’re finding stones outdoors, also be mindful that you’re taking them from an appropriate place, and not taking too many. If you’re buying a crystal, we recommend doing your best to research ethically sourced items and purchase from businesses that are aligned with your values.

Clearing your crystal

When you do find a crystal, it’s a good idea to clear it to remove any residual energy it may be carrying. This is especially important since the crystal is serving an energetic purpose in your home. A simple way to clear your crystal is to place it on a windowsill and let it bathe in sunlight for a whole day.

Crystals and the feng shui bagua mandala

Below we’ve shared one recommended crystal for each area of the feng shui bagua. If you’re new to the feng shui bagua, download our free bagua kit here. We recommend picking one or two areas that you’d like to work on and starting there, instead of placing a crystal in every area of your home at once. Remember that you also don’t have to have all of your crystals out at once if you have several; you can always put some away and bring out new ones, depending on what you want to focus on in your life at this moment.

Zhen: New Beginnings and Family

There are many varieties of quartz, and we love green quartz for Zhen. This stone can really help you connect with the energy of this area, which is all about sprouting, healing, and new growth.

Xun: Wealth, Abundance, and Prosperity

Amethyst is a beautiful purple stone that aligns with the energy of Xun. There’s a richness to amethyst that can help you experience abundance not only materially, but spiritually and emotionally as well.

Tai Qi: Health and Overall Wellbeing

The Tai Qi is in the center of the feng shui bagua, and it’s a very important place to pay attention to because it touches all of the bagua areas around it. Moss agate is a great stone to place in the Tai Qi because it’s connected to strength, balance, and wisdom. This area has to do with health and wellbeing that comes from a place of groundedness and harmony. If you cultivate these feelings in the Tai Qi, they will reverberate into the eight surrounding bagua areas.

Qian: Benefactors, Helpful People, and Travel

Smoky quartz is a wonderful addition to the Qian area of the bagua. It’s one of the most calming crystals, and its ability to provide you with clarity and focus allows you to be open to finding helpful people and receiving their assistance.

Dui: Completion, Children, Productivity, and Joy

If you’re going to buy just one stone, we recommend clear quartz! This stone can provide so much focus and clarification, and it amplifies and clears all other stones. Clear quartz is also a helpful stone to connect with the energy of Dui.

Gen: Knowledge, Self-Cultivation, and Skills

Gen has a lot to do with self-discovery and knowing yourself. Fluorite helps with focus and discernment, which allows you to look at situations and use your skills and knowledge to understand them and find solutions. It also enhances studying and knowledge, which are connected to Gen.

Li: Fame, Recognition, and Visibility

Garnet is a beautiful semi-precious stone that is easy to find in jewelry. It’s connected with love and devotion as well as inspiration, which is the underlying theme of Li and the associated element, fire. Li is about being inspired, being able to inspire others, and putting yourself out there. When you are comfortable being seen, you can inspire fire element qualities like generosity and kindness.

Kan: Career, Path in Life, and Wisdom

Black tourmaline is an amazing grounding stone that allows you to connect with deep wisdom that’s associated with Kan. It also absorbs negative qi, so it can help you feel more grounded and less anxious. Kan is related to the water element as well as fear, so these energetic qualities of black tourmaline can be a really nice complement to this area.

Kun: Relationships, Self-Love, and Partnership

Rose quartz is the stone that’s most associated with self-love, repairing the heart, and being open to new relationships. We recommend tumbled rose quartz for this area because tumbling the stones softens the edges, creating more ease. This can help you show up a little more softly in your relationships. Tumbled rose quartz is also great to keep on your body near your heart!

How to use a crystal grid to create energetic boundaries around your work life

Crystals come from the earth, and the earth element is about boundaries. Since many of us have been working from home more and on video conferences during the day, boundaries around our work lives are very different from even a few years ago. When you’re working at home and on video calls with people you wouldn’t normally invite into your home, it can be very depleting.

One way to work with this is to create an energetic crystal grid at your desk. To do this, you’ll get four pieces of black crystal, like black tourmaline or black obsidian, and put one at each corner of your desk. You can place them on the surface of your desk or in drawers if you have them, or you can fasten them to the underside of your desktop. Then, set the intention that this grid is providing energetic protection between you and your work and filtering the qi around your desk so that things can only go beyond this boundary with your permission.
