In feng shui, we embrace seasonal shifts that can inform changes in our home. Now that it’s getting a little warmer and brighter and the promise of spring grows closer, it’s a great time to clean and reset your space. You may even notice that you feel naturally compelled to do some spring cleaning. Below, we’ve included five simple feng shui spring cleaning suggestions, as well as an optional bonus tip to supercharge each one:
-
Tidy the front door.
The front door and the entryway of your home represents a portal of qi (life force energy). You may have heard this area referred to as the mouth of qi, and this is a really important part of your home because it’s the primary way qi and opportunities enter your space. In feng shui, your front door is how you open your home and yourself to the world so that you can receive. The beginning of spring is an especially great time to clean your entryway since it’s likely that some debris has accumulated here over the winter. Take some time to shake out the doormat, wipe away any mud or salt, and put away winter accessories that you no longer need. Even if it doesn’t quite feel like spring where you are, wood qi is moving at this time of year and refreshing your entryway is a great way to work with this energy. Bonus feng shui tip: When you’re cleaning your front door and the surrounding area, use a non-toxic cleaner with a little bit of orange peel or orange essential oil. Oranges represent wealth and positive qi. As you’re doing this, you can set the intention to invite yang energy into your home.
-
Open your windows.
Opening your windows is a really wonderful way to let fresh qi into your home. This will clear out stagnant energy and get your qi moving. It’s helpful to open your windows at least once during the spring to assist you in your energetic spring cleaning. Nine is a lucky number in feng shui, so we recommend opening all your windows for a minimum of nine minutes. If you live in a very cold climate and this isn’t practical for you, you can also open your windows for nine seconds. This can be done at any time of day, but an ideal time is during the most yang hours of the day, between 11am and 1pm.
Bonus feng shui tip: While one of your windows is open, walk over to it, and take a deep inhale and a long exhale while visualizing that your home is breathing with you.
-
Clean your stove.
In feng shui the stove is a symbol of health, wealth, and resources. It’s important to take the time to clean your stovetop as best you can. If you have a non-toxic cleaner with orange oil from cleaning your front door, you can also use this same cleaner to wipe down and clean your stove. Then, check that all the burners are working and make any necessary repairs.
Bonus feng shui tip: Light all of your burners at once to burn away any obstacles that may have accumulated. As you do this, set an intention that you are clearing the way for increased health, wealth, and overall well-being. Just like opening the windows, any time of day will work, but you can enhance this adjustment by doing it between 11am and 1pm.
-
Deep clean your refrigerator and pantry.
This is a perfect time of year to go through your entire pantry and refrigerator. In feng shui, the areas where you store your food represent how you nourish yourself. Take everything out of these spaces and be on the lookout for anything that has expired or spoiled and anything you just don’t use anymore. Compost what you can and scrub down the refrigerator and pantry. If you haven’t already upgraded to non-toxic cleaners in glass containers, this is a great time to do so, because all of this will affect your feng shui, your health, your nourishment, and how well you do in the world.
Bonus feng shui tip: After you’ve done this deep cleaning, place a piece of clear quartz in the refrigerator or the pantry. You can also place one in each of these locations. First, it’s a good idea to clear your quartz stone by placing it on a windowsill for one 24-hour cycle with the intention of clearing it. Then, take that cleared crystal, hold it in the palms of your hands, and set the intention that this crystal quartz will amplify the health and energetic nourishment of the food that’s adjacent to it.

Cleanse and clear your bathroom.
In feng shui, we recognize that we are not only affected by the qi of our surroundings, but we also have our own qi that runs through us. The bathroom is a symbol of how we reset our energy and cleanse ourselves, so this is a great area to focus on when it comes to clearing our own personal qi. You likely already clean your bathroom pretty regularly, but at this time of year, you may want to set a specific intention while you’re doing so and use a non-toxic cleaner with orange or lemon oil. Lemon is great for this purpose because it is very cleansing and clarifying.
Bonus feng shui tip: If it’s possible in your space, add a small plant in your bathroom to boost the qi and celebrate the arrival of spring. Not sure which plant to choose? Listen to this podcast episode to learn some of our favorites. Another option is to take an epsom salt bath to clear and reset your own qi. This can be symbolic of you shaking off the residue from winter. If you’d like, you can also add in a few drops of an essential oil that you love and are comfortable working with. If you do use an essential oil, just be mindful that they can be very powerful, so only use a very small amount!
We hope these tips are helpful as you spring clean and reset your home for the new season!
