Welcoming the Year of the Horse for Each Zodiac Animal

Each year is associated with one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, as well as an element from the five element system. Understanding the qualities of the coming year’s animal and element can help us get a sense of what we can expect from that year. In 2026, we are saying goodbye to the Wood Snake and welcoming the Fire Horse. While the official transition happened on February 4th, this is a shift that happens over time, so you may have already started to feel this change over the last couple of months.
If you’d like to mark this transition and celebrate the Lunar New Year with us, you can join our New Year’s Reset package that includes a space clearing ceremony, a live gathering, a guided meditation, and a review of all of the zodiac animals!
2026, the Year of the Horse
Horse energy is fast-acting, changeable, and impulsive. Horses are also physical, showy, reactive, and success-oriented. They move directly, in contrast to slithering snakes. Symbolically, horses are connected to success, prosperity, and freedom. For thousands of years, horses have played a vital role in agriculture, transportation, and military campaigns. Owning a horse has also historically been a symbol of wealth, because horses are expensive to maintain and care for. In addition, horses are herd animals, and they need company. All of these qualities of the Horse are themes that may show up for us collectively throughout this next year.
Yang fire energy in 2026
You can think of yang fire as the height of summer, full flames, or the brilliant sun at bright noon. Fire consumes and transforms, and it needs something to feed on and cling to. Fire also provides light that allows things to be seen and revealed. It also has the qualities of inspiration and passion. This energy of yang fire is doubled this year because in the Chinese zodiac, the element connected to the Horse is yang fire. Fire can be inspiring, enlightening, and transformative, but it can also be draining and a little bit exhausting. This is a big energy year, and you can burn out if you don’t have the fuel to source the fire or a way to manage and contain the fire.
What this means for every zodiac animal in 2026
Each of the Chinese zodiac animals has a different relationship with the Horse that will impact their experience of the Horse year. Each animal also has a different elemental relationship with yang fire that will influence your year as well. Below, we’ve included an overview of what each zodiac animal can expect in 2026 based on this year’s energy.
Note: If your birthday is between January 1st and February 3rd, your zodiac animal is the preceding year because the official transition is February 4th.
-
Rat 子
1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020
Element: Rats embody yang water, like a fast-moving river.
The elemental interaction for the Rat this year will be challenging, because fire transforms water. This isn’t a bad thing, however – keep in mind that transformation can bring growth and opportunities. The Rat also clashes with the Horse, meaning this will be a challenging year from the zodiac animal perspective as well.
What to focus on this year: This is a year to take it easy and learn from the energy of the Horse. Rats don’t like to move in one direction, like an arrow towards a target, but you can learn about this kind of focused movement from the Horse. Look to your friends for support, and consider carrying a three-dimensional Ram charm for good luck. In the school of feng shui that we practice, BTB feng shui, it is considered auspicious to carry a three-dimensional representation of the year animal’s best friend. The Horse’s best friend is the Ram, and you can find Ram charms that have been made and blessed by Anjie in the Holistic Spaces shop.
-
Ox 丑
1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021
Element: Oxen embody yin earth, like soft sand on the beach.
The fire element supports and feeds the earth element, so the Ox will receive some nourishment from this year’s fire energy. However, like the Rat, the Ox clashes with the Horse, so there will also be challenges this year.
What to focus on this year: Take it easy this year. You have the power to pull, like the Horse, but remember that you don’t have to keep up with the Horse’s speed. Slow down when you need to so you don’t burn out, and lean on your friends for support. A Ram amulet will also be supportive for you this year.
-
Tiger 寅
1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022
Element: Tigers embody yang wood, like a blade of new grass in spring.
Your strong wood energy can keep the fire going all year. The Tiger is also in harmony with the Horse, so this is an auspicious year. This will offer some much-needed relief from the Year of the Snake, which may have been difficult for the Tiger.
What to focus on this year: This is the time for you to spring back into action. Your dynamic energy will be supported by the freedom and inspiration that the Horse year will offer you. At the same time, make sure you nourish yourself and get the support you need to avoid feeling drained.
-
Rabbit 卯
1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023
Element: Rabbits have the quality of yin wood, like blooming flowers or soft tendrils.
Yin wood will also fuel the fire energy of this year, but because yin wood is small and soft, it will be burned up very easily. The relationship between the Rabbit and the Horse is neutral. They share the quality of sensitivity; both Horses and Rabbits are very in tune with their senses and aware of their surroundings.
What to focus on this year: Be sure to nourish yourself with the water element, which will help you stay flexible and energetic amidst this year’s intense fire energy. Enjoy your ability to tune into your senses, and make sure to take all the pauses you need. This will help you harness the bursts of energy that are offered to you by the Horse.
-
Dragon 辰
1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024
Element: Dragons embody yang earth, like high, rocky, mountainous peaks.
Fire feeds and creates earth. This is good news for the Dragon, who will be supported by this year’s fire energy. Dragons and Horses have a neutral relationship, and there are many similarities between these two animals. The energy is fast and powerful this year, but Dragons are strong, and they can handle this more easily than some other animals.
What to focus on this year: There’s an invitation to connect with your herd and your community, which could be a little difficult for the Dragon. You don’t always have to do it alone, and your power and achievements can be even greater when you are supported by community and good friends.
-
Snake 巳
1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025
Element: The elemental quality of the Snake is yin fire, like a candle flame or warm, glowing embers.
When we think of the elemental interaction between yin fire and yang fire, yin can grow into yang. A little spark can turn into a massive flame. You’ll feel a lot of relief as we leave the Snake year, because being in your own animal’s year can be a challenge. The Snake’s relationship with the Horse is neutral. In the story of the amazing race between all of the zodiac animals, the Snake actually comes in right before the Horse, because the Snake is said to have curled up around the Horse’s leg so that they crossed the finish line together. The Horse’s courage and strength will lend you enormous inspiration and movement, so there’s an invitation here to let the qi of the Horse carry you through this year.
What to focus on this year: To keep this year’s fire energy in check, you’ll want to make sure you have enough support from the wood element by embracing wood qualities like flexibility and growth. Additionally, bring in the support of the earth element to help contain the fire and keep it under control, like stones around a campfire.

Horse 午
1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026
Element: Horses embody yang fire, like the blazing sun at high noon.
Elementally, this year will bring a lot of fire for you, which can be intense. You are also in your own year, which may sound like a good thing, but it can actually be quite challenging. Every year there is a different year god that is sitting in the throne, and this god can be insulted by the animal that is in the spotlight that year. This means it’s especially important to be mindful of your approach to the Year of the Horse.
What to focus on this year: Horses are herd animals, and you can lean into this in 2026. Trust in your community, and find safety and wisdom in companionship. Find your close friends, including the Ram, and carry a three-dimensional Ram charm with you. From an elemental perspective, bring in water and wood to balance the fire.

Ram 未
1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015
Element: Rams, also known as Sheep or Goats, embody yin earth energy, like soft, rich, nurturing soil.
Fire nourishes earth, so the Ram will be fed and supported by the fiery energy of this year. The Ram is also the best friend of the Horse, and this is a very auspicious relationship. Sheep can have a negative connotation among Westerners, because sheep are thought of as followers. If you were born in the Year of the Ram and you don’t feel happy about being associated with a ram or a sheep, this is an opportunity to investigate that. The Ram isn’t about being a leader, but you also don’t have to look at yourself as a follower. You can think of this as following the flow of qi, and swimming with the current rather than against it in a way that benefits you and your community.
What to focus on this year: With all this good energy on your side, connect with your passions, and connect with the Horse’s energy to invite success, freedom, and prosperity on your own terms. With so much good qi on your side this year, you have a lot to share with everyone around you.
-
Monkey 申
1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016
Element: Monkeys embody yang metal, like a sharp, fierce sword.
The fire of this year can melt metal, but in the process, the metal becomes refined and can turn into something more beautiful. The relationship between the Monkey and the Horse is neutral, but keep in mind that this year’s fire energy can be a little challenging for you.
What to focus on this year: There is an invitation to be curious, which comes naturally to Monkeys. Where do you want this year to lead you? You can meander and swing all over the place, or you can learn from the Horse to be direct and follow the track that leads you where you want to go. There’s an opportunity to harness the powder, freedom, and prosperity that the Horse offers this year.
-
Rooster 酉
1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017
Element: Roosters are yin metal, like delicate, beautiful, shiny jewelry.
Again, fire will melt metal, and in the process, fire burns away impurities and can reshape metal. The Rooster is coming out of a lucky, harmonious year, and this year will be less auspicious, but the relationship between the Rooster and the Horse is neutral. Both Horses and Roosters tend to be direct, and they can both be forces of nature. This year, the Rooster may get carried away with being a little more loud and showy than usual, but the Rooster can also learn from the Horse to be more humble.
What to focus on this year: Look to the friendly, humble qualities of the Horse, and notice how that comes out in your life. It could mean giving others a chance to talk and share, or not needing to be the center of attention – this brings us back again to the idea of the herd. Roosters are generally solitary animals, but there is an invitation to embrace community this year.
-
Dog 戌
1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018
Element: Dogs embody yang earth, like a strong cliff wall.
Earth is fed and supported by fire, so the fire energy of this year will be nourishing for the Dog. The Dog is also in harmony with the Horse. Both animals are straightforward and resilient, so the Dog will feel right at home this year. Both Horses and Dogs are also loyal companions, and they know how to work together.
What to focus on this year: This is a good time to do what you do best, and offer the gifts that you have as a Dog through service, kindness, and good cheer. The energies of fire and the Horse will support you and feed your passion for making the world a better place. As a Dog, you really have the energy on their side this year, and you’ll be comfortable sharing this energy to support others.
-
Pig 亥
1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019
Element: Pigs have the quality of yin water, like a light shower or misty, cold dew.
As you can imagine, yin water doesn’t hold up very well to yang fire. The big fire will immediately dry up the light, yin water, so you’ll need to allow for change and transformation this year. The Pig clashed with the Snake last year, and the relationship between the Pig and the Horse is more neutral, so Pigs will feel some relief in 2026.
What to focus on this year: Continue the self-care practices that supported you in the Year of the Snake, and enjoy the ease and simplicity that comes from the Year of the Horse. The fire element may give you some urgency, but do what you can to take care of yourself. As a Pig, this means focusing less on self-indulgence and more on diligence. Be sure to feed the water element by cultivating reflection, flow, and wisdom.
