If you’ve been interested in feng shui for a while, you’ve probably come across feng shui crystal balls. These are different from natural mineral crystals; a feng shui crystal ball is a faceted glass sphere, usually about the size of a golf ball, with a hole that allows it to be hung from the ceiling.

We’ve noticed that people tend to be really curious about feng shui crystal balls. If you have one hanging in your window just because it looks pretty, or you’ve bought one and aren’t sure what to do with it, you’re not alone! There is also a lot of misinformation about this common feng shui object, so we wanted to help clear the confusion and provide some simple ways that crystal balls can be used to enhance your home’s feng shui.

Here are five of our favorite ways to use feng shui crystal balls:

  1. Brighten a Dark Area of Your Home

Feng shui crystal balls have the ability to brighten and lift the qi (life force energy) in a space. They’re also said to have the energy of the sun. If there’s an area in your home that feels particularly dark, you can hang a feng shui crystal ball from the ceiling there with the intention of adding light and uplifting the qi.

  2. Activate an Area of the Bagua

First, get familiar with the feng shui bagua. The bagua is a mandala that can be laid over a floor plan, with different areas corresponding to different aspects of life. If you haven’t laid the bagua on your home yet, you can download our free ebook to learn how to do this.

When you first discover the bagua, you’ll probably want to work on every area right away — after all, who wouldn’t want to boost their finances, career, love life, and fame all at once? However, we’d recommend choosing just one area to start with. Which of the bagua areas resonates with you the most right now? Which one feels like it needs the most attention at this moment?

Once you’ve chosen a bagua area (called a gua) to work with, you can hang a feng shui crystal ball in that area of your home or bedroom to activate it. If you’re not sure which gua to start with, we would suggest starting with the center of your home or bedroom, called the Tai Qi. After you’ve hung your feng shui crystal, be sure to leave it there for at least 27 days so that it has a chance to modulate the qi.

  3. Change the Flow of Qi

Qi is life force energy, and it’s the main thing we look at in feng shui as well as other Asian modalities, like tai qi and traditional Chinese medicine. Qi flows through your body as well as your home, and sometimes there are design details in a home that are not optimal for the flow of qi. One common example of this is a bed that is aligned with a door, especially a bathroom door.

If your bed is aligned with a door, you can hang a feng shui crystal ball halfway between the bed and the door. Ideally, the bottom of the crystal ball should be in line with the top of the door. The crystal helps to modulate and disperse the qi so that you are protected while you’re in bed.

  4. Move the Qi in Your Home

There may be parts of your home that feel stagnant or dull, like the qi is not circulating freely. Hanging a feng shui crystal ball here can help to create more movement, and keep the qi from sticking in a dark corner or a room that isn’t used often.

Things get even more interesting when you overlay the bagua. As feng shui practitioners, we can use the bagua to gain insight into what might be going on in a certain area of a client’s life.

However, you don’t need to use the bagua to use a feng shui crystal ball for this purpose. Just notice where in your home the energy feels low, dull, or stagnant, and hang a crystal ball here with the intention of moving the qi around the space.

  5. Slow Down the Qi

Feng shui crystal balls can also be used to slow down fast-moving qi. For instance, if you have a long, narrow hallway, it can create fast-moving, compressed qi that moves towards whatever is at the end of the hallway. It’s a good idea to slow down the flow of qi in a situation like this, especially if there is a bedroom at the end of the hallway. To do this, you can hang a feng shui crystal from the ceiling in the hallway. As you do this, set the intention that you would like the qi to slow down and feel more expansive.

How to Hang a Feng Shui Crystal Ball

Once you’ve chosen a purpose for your feng shui crystal ball, it’s important to hang it properly. First, make sure your crystal is a high-quality one. You’ll want to hang it from the ceiling, typically with a red string or ribbon. Make sure it’s hung at a height that won’t hit anyone in the head as they are moving through the space. Also, it’s important to make sure your crystal ball is fastened properly, so that it is secure and will not fall down. In the Holistic Spaces store, we sell feng shui crystal kits that include a high-quality feng shui crystal as well as the supplies you’ll need to hang it.

We hope this helps you understand how a feng shui crystal ball can be used in your space! If you still have questions, we’d recommend working one-on-one with a feng shui consultant who can help you figure out the best location for a crystal ball in your home.
